The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said on May 22 that the Trump administration has suspended Harvard University's eligibility to recruit international students. In a letter to Harvard University, U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem said that Harvard University's Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) certification was revoked effective immediately.
The letter stated that the revocation of accreditation will prevent Harvard University from enrolling any foreign students with F or J non-immigrant status in the 2025-2026 academic year. In addition, current students with F or J non-immigrant status must transfer to other universities, otherwise they will not be able to maintain their non-immigrant status. The move means Harvard University will no longer be able to recruit international students, and existing foreign students must transfer or lose their legal status. Harvard University: DHS's move is "illegal".On the 22nd local time, Harvard University in the United States said that the Department of Homeland Security's move to prevent it from recruiting international students was "illegal." Harvard University said it would do its utmost to maintain its ability to recruit international students and scholars from more than 140 countries.Recently, the U.S. federal government threatened to freeze federal funding and demanded that many universities "rectify". Harvard University, a famous private institution in the United States, chose to "harden its stance".
